I hope to inspire and entertain you with a lot of sewing and a little of everything else!

Polka-dotty Quilt

I have not posted much lately. Partly because I haven't done much sewing and partly because we've been busy with other things. My kiddos go back to school next week, so maybe I'll have more time to get things done- or maybe not!
I started this quilt a few months ago as part of my "sewing school." My friend Carrie wants to learn to quilt, so we were each working on a single Irish chain baby quilt. I had set it aside, because we hadn't had a chance to work on it over the summer. BUT I found out that a friend of mine is having a baby boy around Christmas, so I thought maybe I'll finish it as a gift.
We are at the beach right now, so I brought this along to work on.
The single Irish chain pattern is very simple. Just 9-patches alternating with solid blocks. The top picture shows how the "chain" looks. The blocks aren't all finished yet or sewn together. I think I have enough blocks to make the finished quilt 7 blocks wide and 8 blocks long, which would be a good size for a baby.
I'm thinking of backing it with red flannel to make it really cozy.
I hope I will have more sewing (or something) to share soon!!

Patchwork Trucks Boy's Suit

We've been spending a lot of time at the lake this summer. We've also been outside, seeing friends, taking care of our chickens, and getting ready for school. We've also been cleaning out our basement- yahoo! What I have not done is any sewing!
I don't like to go too long without a post, so I am sharing an oldie but goodie today. This little shirt and shorts was Davy's first day of preschool outfit (5 years ago!).
The patchwork trucks are a Children's Corner pattern. They have several different designs, although I think they are now OOP. The shirt and shorts are Children's Corner MIchael. This outfit was really cute on him and it makes me remember the many years he loved trucks! We used to play "talking trucks" where we would be the voices for the toy trucks! I hope I'll have some new sewing to share with you soon!! My kids go back to school in 2 weeks- how about yours?? I leave you with a little taste of summer:

Civil War Days

I attended my first large Civil War event last weekend. I just visited for one day. I thought you'd like to see what went on and some of the beautiful clothing.
Here is where I spent much of the day. The more experienced reenactors have tents and "flys" (the canopy over us). It was not too hot that day, but the shade of the fly was welcome. I sat in the corner and worked on hand-piecing 9-patch squares while chatting with the ladies.
Here is a view of one family's large tent (Mom, Dad, 4 little girls). The fly is to the right. The Mama with the baby packed trunks, food, clothing, bedding, a lovely pram, baby seat, 4 tables, chairs, etc. I don't know how they did it!! Her baby wore a pretty white antique baby dress and cap.
I saw my first battle. These were Union soldiers firing their cannon. You could feel the booms- they were super loud and shook the ground!

The ladies put much effort into their costuming. They all had proper headwear (I didn't) and even wore the proper under-pinnings, despite the heat.

In the afternoon, we started to get dinner ready.

It was very good. We had to remember to bring plates, cutlery, glasses. The menu included: roast chicken and ham, 3-bean salad, Boston brown bread, macaroni salad, deviled eggs, and peach pie.
After dinner, people visit. This Confederate group had a banjo player and someone playing bones, I think. It sounded really good!

There were animal reenactors, too, including horses and a baby duck! Sometimes chickens attend.

In just a couple of hours of visiting time, I completed 6 quilt blocks, stitched by hand. These are not pressed yet, but I think they look pretty good! Someday I might have enough to sash them into a Civil War Quilt. It was an interesting day!!
